Here are a few of the books I've read recently and really enjoyed. If any of you have already read them, feel free to post some comments!
"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair: a classic novel that illustrates the injustice and oppression suffered by factory workers and the working class as a whole. It also gives you reason to be more conscious about where your food comes from. Although the last 50 pages or so seem a little preachy and forced, it's still a great and timeless novel!
"Multitude: War and Democracy in the Age of Empire" by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri: This is the follow-up manifesto to the philosophical duo's book "Empire." Much like "Empire," this book is unusual because it is written by leftist optimists who see hope ahead instead of doom and gloom. Even during an era of war and imperialism, they point toward the democratic socialist future that is coming in the aftermath.
"The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings For the Nonbeliever" edited by Christopher Hitchens: This is an excellent anthology of writings by famous and brilliant atheists and secularists throughout the ages. Some of the authors included are Marx, Darwin, Twain, Einstein, and Spinoza.
